Not all stories end with a happy ending (No pun intended in Thailand) & unfortunately our last day ended with a car crash through the mountains of Chiang Mai province. Before you all start stressing Fred is fine & Duncan still has his looks & Mr Hell-ya never fals of his bike was all good, I can't say the same for Travis (Number 2)!!
We had a sleepy Thai driver fall asleep in the middle of the day and hit a bike as he was coming up the hill, he awoke as he was on the wrong side of the road. BOOM CRACK we have a bike & rider down. I am happy to say the car only smashed its front light & the family in the car is fine.
I can't say the same for the injuries sustained on our end, there was a second hole in the buttocks of a fellow rider, broken wrist, busted ribs & a brused ego. It does not end there as the Thai driver didn't have insurance & this meant wheeling and dealing for payment. In order to start dealing the driver called his village in to work out the damage. 40 Thai blokes rocked up on the back of a ute, shit I thought this was going to get bad.
The mood of the ride hit an all time low with a fellow rider sitting in the ditch with cuts to his pretty little face & looking as white as a ghost. We all thought SHIT you nearly died, soon reality kicked in quick and we looked at each other and said thank fuck it was not us in the ditch.
** Quick note this blog was not going to be posted as we didn't want to worry any family members back home. We had a quick chat at the hospital yesterday and said stuff it lets post this bad boy up**
We now have a problem, who is going to call Khat & Yvette (Travis number 2's mum & partner) and tell them the news, when they find out Travis was not in the accident they will never believe me.
Yep that's right our lead rider Andy was the bloke that through himself on the line to save us, he said from day 1 his job was to stop the cars from hitting us. Andy did his job very well. Thank you Andy you did an excellent job, it blokes like you that keep our little Aus buts safe on the road.
So what have we learned from this amazing adventure, bloody pommie expats bounce of car's better then us Australian's. From this day forth we will only ride with a pommie as a lead rider. They always seem to take the first and last falls for the ride. Andy you are number 1
We can now recommend a great bloke if you are heading to Thailand, his name is Andy the car magnet, let him know when you are booking the Mad 5 sent you & I assure you he will show you a special time. Check him out - http://www.endurowild.com/
All bullshit aside Andy was very lucky he didn't go through the front window of the ute, it was thanks to his skills that saved himself and us. Well done Magnet you saved our butts, we are sorry that you now have 2 holes in your butt. Take care and we hope you can start using toilet paper with your good hand soon. Thanks and all the best from the Mad 5 Dirt Ride.
